Theodore J. Kearns, 78, passed away January 5, 2011, at Rosewood on Broadway in Fargo, ND.
Theodore "Ted" was born January 5, 1933, in Hebron, ND, to Eugene and Albertina Kearns. He attended school and also worked to help his family. He enlisted in the Army on his 18th birthday. Ted was sent to the front lines of the Korean War. He served as a medic and received a Purple Heart for bravery and wounds received in action.
Ted graduated from Wahpeton State School of Science with a degree in sheet metal work. In 1957, Ted met Hazel, the love of his life. They were married June 22, 1958, and settled in Fargo where Ted worked as a sheet metal worker. Ted also taught the apprenticeship program for the Sheet Metal Workers Union at South High for many years. He served as president of the Sheet Metal Workers Union and traveled to attend many classes to learn advances in heating and cooling for energy conservation.
Ted was so proud that his two sons and grandson followed in his footsteps. In the early 1980's, Ted and his son, Kyle, realized their dream of starting a family business: Along with his son, Kraig, and his grandson, Kyle Jr., Sun Mechanical Heating and Air Conditioning is a 3 generation business. Ted's legacy and love of the trade carries on.
Ted loved taking his family on outings, whether it was tobogganing in the winter, or camping all over the United States in the summer. Ted loved going metal detecting, doing remodeling and building projects. He especially adored his grandchildren.
Ted spent many hours playing guitar and singing country western music. He even once tried out for a talent show but never heard back.
Ted is survived by his wife of 53 years, Hazel (Sukut Sundahl) Kearns; a daughter, Karene Kearns; two sons, Kyle (Maureen) Kearns and Kraig (Jovie) Kearns; grandchildren, Kyle Jr., Samantha, Melissa, Joey and Esther; sisters, Lorraine (Matthew) Kronberge
Visitation: Monday, from 6 - 8 PM with a Prayer Service at 7 PM, Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead, MN.
Funeral: Tuesday, January 11, 2011, at 2 PM, Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Fargo.
Burial: Riverside Cemetery, Fargo.
