With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Steven “Bear” Neil Barry, 71, who left this world on 20 March 2026, with his wife Darcy holding his hand at the VA Hospital in Fargo. Born to Neil and JoAnn (Gantzer) Barry, on 17 February 1955, at St. Ansgar Hospital in Moorhead, MN, Steven was raised on the family farm in rural Barnesville, where he developed a profound love for agriculture and the land.

An active and spirited child, Steven attended Assumption Catholic School before moving on to Barnesville High School, where he graduated in 1973. He was known for his athleticism on the football field, yet it was his decision to serve in the United States Air Force shortly after graduating that marked a pivotal moment in his life. Enlisting in November 1973, he was a jet engine mechanic and honorably discharged in August 1977, his experience in the service instilled a deep sense of duty and pride that would stay with him throughout his life.

Upon returning home to Barnesville, Steve continued to honor family legacy by contributing to the Barry Family Farm and working at various local farms, including those of Gary Smith, Kurt Sogn, and Roger Hanson. Yet, what truly lit up his life was the love he found in Darcy Egge. Their serendipitous meeting at the American Legion led to a beautiful marriage on 15 June 1985, a partnership filled with love, laughter, and hard work.

Steven was not just a devoted husband and a dedicated farmer; he was also known for his gentle spirit and kind heart. He enjoyed deer hunting and camping, but perhaps his most cherished moments came while working at Darcy’s Daycare the Teddy Bear House in Moorhead. There, he became the beloved handyman who brought smiles to the little ones who adored him, leaving an indelible mark on their hearts. He was also very devoted to helping care for his mother after the passing of his dad, and eventually he kept a keen eye and helped his sister Mary. He took pride in his yard, spending time on the mower, and the spring planting of the potatoes and the rest of the garden. He had a four legged best friend, Zeus, who followed Steve around everywhere and they would share ice cream every night together.

In recent months, Steven and Darcy lovingly crafted their new home on the Barry family farm, a testament to their enduring commitment to one another and their shared dreams. Following retirement, he liked to share time driving around checking the crops with Darcy. He is survived by his devoted wife, Darcy Barry, two sons, Timothy and Patrick Barry, granddaughter Scarlett Barry; as well as his brothers, Kevin Barry and Kent (Janelle) Barry. He was preceded in death by his parents, Neil and JoAnn Barry, brother Patrick, and sisters Mary Barry and Barb Barry.

In honor of Steven’s life and military service, a private ceremony will be held. He will receive a burial with military honors at the Fargo National Cemetery in Fargo, where he will be laid to rest with dignity and gratitude for his service. As we remember Steven Neil Barry, we hold onto the cherished memories of his kindness and celebrate a life well-lived. May he find peace in eternal rest.
