Sarah Jane Hayes

Sarah Jane Hayes (Mundstock), 75, of Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, passed away on Thursday, November 13, 2025, from complications from heart surgery.

Sarah was born on December 14, 1949, in Moorhead, Minnesota, to Lawrence and Charlotte Mundstock. She grew up in rural Barnesville, Minnesota, where she was active in 4-H and other community and church activities. Sarah was a proud graduate of Barnesville High School’s class of 1967. She continued to be active in the community and helped in the planning of the All-School Reunion in 2023.

Sarah attended Alexandria Technical College where she studied interior design and met the love of her life, Greg Hayes. Sarah and Greg were married in December 1968 and lived in many communities throughout Minnesota. They raised their two children, Valerie and John, in Dilworth, Minnesota.

Sarah and Greg retired to Tamarack Lake in 2020 where Sarah found profound joy in quilting, gardening and spending time with friends. Her quilts were greatly admired by everyone who saw them or was blessed by receiving one she made. Sarah was actively involved in numerous county fairs as an exhibitor and a judge. She would enter her handmade quilts and beautiful flowers grown in her gardens. Sarah was proud of the many blue ribbons and grand champion ribbons she received for her exhibits. As a judge, she greatly enjoyed meeting with entrants and discussing the inspiration for their exhibits and serving as a mentor for the next generation. Sarah also took pleasure in creating embroidered ornaments and unexpectedly gifting them to her many friends and family throughout the year.

Sarah is survived by her husband, Greg; daughter, Valerie (Chris Wunder) of Naples, Florida; son, John (Nicole) of St. Cloud, Minnesota; and granddaughter, Rylee.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Charlotte Mundstock, and brother Walter.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 PM, on Sunday, December 14, 2025, which would have been Sarah’s 76th birthday. It will be held at St. James United Church of Christ in Barnesville, where Sarah and Greg were married. Reverand Mark Asleson will be officiating. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the Celebration.
