Raymond Ralph Peppel age 81, died peacefully on Friday, August 28, 2026, at his home in rural Barnesville. He has been in failing health since 2018 when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 5:00 pm at Assumption Catholic Church in Barnesville. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Barnesville, MN. Visitation will begin at 4:00 PM Saturday.

Raymond, son of Clayton and Elsie (Weis) Peppel was born May 26, 1945, in Barnesville, MN. He grew up on the family farm west of Barnesville. He attended school in Barnesville and graduated with the class of 1963. During his high school years, he was in track and wrestling, played football and was on a gymnastic team. After high school he continued farming with his father and brother. They raised potatoes, corn, and small grain. At age 24, Ray bought his own place, close to town, and continued farming, adding cattle and horses.

On October 18, 1969, Ray was united in marriage to Phyllis Marie McDunn at Assumption Catholic Church in Barnesville MN. They made their home on the new place and were blessed with two children, Kelly and Wendy. Ray was dedicated to his family and to his farm. He was a member of Assumption Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was a founding member of the Barnesville Silver Spur Saddle Club. He and his brother Richard were Grand Marshals for the 2007 Potato Days Parade, and he won the potato sack sewing contest eight times. Ray spent many hours baling hay and sitting in auction barns buying and selling cattle where he became very good at the auctioneer chant, which made the grandchildren giggle! He was very proud of his children and grandchildren and his advice to them for success in life was “to cultivate patience and don’t take any wooden nickels!” He enjoyed trail riding with friends and ground training young horses. He also enjoyed bowling, hunting and fishing, he was a very loyal Barnesville Trojan fan (any sport the kids were in) and a Minnesota Vikings Football fan. Ray was famous and “proud of” greeting his friends and nephews with an impressive gripped handshake, and lovingly “hug lifting” the girls or giving them an explosive fist bump.

Ray is survived by his wife Phyllis, children: Kelly (Christy) Peppel, and Wendy Peppel; 3 grandchildren: Alexander (Jordyn), Elizabeth and Kendra, and one great grandchild: Dakota; 2 siblings: Elaine (Kent) Tonsfeldt, and Chuck (Patti) Peppel. 10 Nieces and 18 Nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Mary Anderson and his brother Richard.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Assumption Church “Renewing the Heart Restoration Fund” or Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
