Rachel Braaten

Rachel E. Braaten, 91, of Moorhead, MN, passed away Sunday, July 5, 2026, in Touchmark at Harwood Groves, Fargo, ND.

Rachel Ellen Roscoe was born March 10, 1935, the daughter of Milledge and Wanda (Whipple) Roscoe, in Dickey, ND. She was raised on a farm near Dickey and graduated from Dickey High School in 1953. Following graduation, Rachel moved to Fargo where she attended business college before she began working for Sears in the accounting department.

While living in Fargo, Rachel met her future husband, Jerome “Jerry” Braaten, and they were married on December 29, 1959, in Faith Methodist Church in Fargo. They initially lived in Billings, MT, and Watford City, ND, before settling in Sidney, MT. Over the years, Rachel worked at Mountain Bell Telephone Company and took on seasonal roles with the Sugar beet plant and tax office.

In retirement, Rachel and Jerry, enjoyed traveling, frequently embarking on bus trips and cruises, particularly river barge cruises throughout the United States. In 2010, they moved to Moorhead, and in 2022, found a new community Touchmark, where Rachel was known for her beautiful gentle smile.

In her leisure time, Rachel found joy in gardening and playing card games like Bridge and Pinochle. She also enjoyed volunteering over the years.

Rachel is survived by her four children, Darcy (Kym) Braaten, Kent (Daneen) Braaten, Brian (Jen) Braaten and Suzanne (Jon) Sheldon; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Quast; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jerome “Jerry”; brother, Ernest Roscoe; sister, Patricia Shasky; and two infant siblings.

In lieu of customary remembrance, the family kindly requests with gratitude that memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

A Gathering of Family and Friends for Rachel will begin at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, July 15, 2026, followed by a Celebration of Her Life at 11:00 AM in Messiah Lutheran Church, Fargo. She will be laid to rest in North Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery, Mandan, ND.
