Paul Maassel

Paul Frederick Maassel was born on July 2, 1922 in New Underwood, SD. He was the son of Rev. George and Clara (Schroeder) Maassel. At the time Paul's father was Circuit Rider in western South Dakota. Later the family moved to Sherwood, OH, and then Napoleon (Freedom Township), OH. Paul attended St. John's Lutheran School until 1936 and Concordia High School and College from 1936-1942. He then transferred to Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, MO, graduating in 1947 with a Masters of Divinity. While attending the Seminary, he sang with the International Lutheran Hour Chorus.
Paul was united in marriage with Ellen Alberg of Warwick, ND, on October 26, 1952. Paul served parishes in Munich, Lidgerwood, and Williston, ND; and Rapid City, SD. He left the parish ministry in 1969. He then attended Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, and North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND, where he received a Masters degree in 1971. He worked for a number of years with the Minnesota State Employment Service and later as a beekeeper. After his retirement he was an organist for Immanuel Lutheran Church in Fargo for ten years. In retirement he enjoyed woodcarving and the friendship of fellow carvers. Throughout his life, Paul's faith in God sustained and guided him. Paul died Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at eighty-one years of age.
Survivors include his wife, Ellen, Moorhead; children Mark (Chris) Maassel, Valparaiso, IN; Sonia (Eric) Jacobsen, Roseville, MN; Sharon (Mark) Peske, Bemidji, MN; Michael (Karen) Maassel, Fargo, and 15 grandchildren.
Brothers and sisters are Lester Maassel, Lois Wesche, Richard (Carol) Maassel, all of Ft. Wayne, IN; Delmar (Yvonne) Maassel, Volo, IL; Juanita (Oliver) Thorpe, Wilmington, DE; Ruth (Don) McClain, Columbus, OH; and Miriam (Leonard) Neumann, Mt. Carmel, IL. Paul was preceded in death by his father, mother, and brother, Norman.

Visitation for Paul will be Friday, May 21, 2004, from 6 - 8 PM, at Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.
The funeral will be Saturday, May 22, 2004, at 2 PM, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Fargo. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Moorhead.
