Nina Lou Fischer, 93, of Moorhead MN, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at Bethany on University, after a long battle with dementia. Nina was born in a taxicab en route to the hospital on March 1, 1933, in Fargo, ND, the tenth of eleven children born to Senius and Cecelia (Andersen) Gade.
As a child, Nina could often be seen running barefoot around the golden ridge in North Fargo, playing games with neighborhood children who would become some of her lifelong friends. Nina attended school in North Fargo and could be found babysitting for her many nieces and nephews. As a teenager she began working as a waitress at the Bluebird Café. It was there that Allan B Fischer first noticed her and after months of trying to date her, she finally gave in and gave him a free milk shake.
On July 1, 1950, Nina married Allan at St Mary’s Cathedral in Fargo. They made their home in Fargo until the tornado of 1957 destroyed it and most of their belongings. They then moved to Moorhead, MN. Thankfully her sewing machine survived because Nina loved to sew. Throughout her life, she made dozens of outfits and Halloween costumes for her children and grandchildren and even did some sewing for Tempo, a local department store. Nina worked at Reed Cleaners but later returned to waitressing working at the Tree Top where she was thrilled to have met country music star Eddy Arnold, who even gave her his autograph. After leaving waitressing, Nina was a homemaker for several years before taking an active role in the family tree service, answering phones and delivering messages.
Nina was also passionate about her rose garden. She loved planting roses of all colors and always had a rose in water on her kitchen table. She loved her family dearly, especially the children and babies. There were always plenty of laughs, hugs, and kisses, and she was always ready to play games especially Connect Four and Trouble.
Nina was a devout catholic and a member of Catholic Daughters and Christian Mothers at St Joseph’s Church in Moorhead. There she spent countless hours volunteering for the church and school and delivering Meals on Wheels. She met many of her friends through the church and loved visiting with them over coffee, cookies and lunches.
Nina was the kindest soul and had the greatest sense of humor, both of which she kept until the end. We will cherish the many memories she gave us and will miss her more than words can express.
She is survived by her children, Daniel (Mary) Fischer and Roger (Anna) Fischer, both Moorhead, Timothy Fischer, Hudson, WI, LuAnn (Robert) Durant, Mahnomen, MN, and Julie (Derek) Stockley, West Fargo, ND; grandchildren, Troy Fischer, Jason (Melanie) Fischer, Jeremy (Sherie) Fischer, Angela (Ryan) Rosenfeldt, Tanya (Wally) Fischer, Jessica (Shaun) Nelson, Kari Fischer, Amber Fischer, Travis Hagen, Krista Hagen, Brenda (Alex Rendon) Hagen, Jacqueline Durant, Rachel (Chase) Dorman, Amanda (George) Higgins and Kelsie Grunewald; great-grandchildren, Sylvia, Levi, Noah, James, Lydia, Brianna, Tyler, Riley, Emma, Carter, Aubrey, Ava, Mauer, Kaleb, Taylor, Jacob, Zander, Vayda, Vanna, Alecia, Willow, Nora, Adam, Zaden, Christian, Oliver, Rose, Joshua, Alexis, Kinsley, Bradie, Riley, Cadence and Payson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Allan; son, Joel; granddaughter, Emily Durant; great-grandchildren, Taylor Rosenfeldt, Brayden Grunewald and Maverick McQuay; brothers, Arnold, Leslie, Neils and Elven Gade; and sisters, Ella Peterson, Esther Oxborough, Elvera Loberg, Arlene Williams, Marcella Gade and Alta Gillette.
A visitation for Nina will be Sunday, October 4, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, with a 5:00 PM Prayer Service in Korsmo Funeral Home, Moorhead. Mass of Christian burial will be Monday, October 5, 2026, at 11:00 AM, in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Moorhead. She will be laid to rest in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Moorhead immediately following lunch.
