Melvin C. Makela

Melvin C. Makela, was born on April 8, 1930, in Wadena, Minnesota, to Nestor and Hulda (Raisenen) Makela. Raised in Floodwood, Minnesota, he completed his education at Floodwood High School in 1948.

In October 1950, Melvin enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving his country with honor until his honorable discharge in October 1954. He married Marilyn R. Anderson in December 1957, and the couple made their home in Duluth, MN. Melvin furthered his education by graduating from the University of Minnesota Duluth in August 1959.

Melvin began his professional career with Minnesota Job Service in 1960 and devoted nearly three decades to his work before retiring on June 21, 1989.

An avid outdoorsman, Melvin enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and reading. He particularly cherished time spent at his cabin in the woods. His commitment to service extended to his community involvement, including a 75-year membership in the American Legion, where he served as past commander of Post 21 in Moorhead, MN. Additionally, he was a distinguished member of the 40 & 8 organization.

Melvin is survived by two sons, Gerald (Pam) Makela of Raymond, MN, and Charles Makela of Arden Hills, MN; three grandsons, Tyler (Beth), Phillip (Courtney), and Andrew (Kimberly); and seven great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marilyn; and siblings, Alyce Johnson, Arlene Rogers, Dorothy Hicks and Morris Makela.
