On November 13, 2025, Mary Louise (Maertens) DeVries passed from the valley of tears, which is this World, into the joyous kingdom of God. Mary knew Jesus as her personal Lord and Savior, and she has gone to live with Jesus. Ephesians 2:8-9: (Amplified Bible) For it is by grace [God’s remarkable compassion and favor drawing you to Christ] that you have been saved [actually delivered from judgment and given eternal life] through faith; and this [salvation] is not of yourselves [not through your own effort], but it is the [undeserved, gracious] gift of God;
Mary came into this world on May 22, 1947, to Margaret (Eggermont) and John Maertens. During her first 8 years of school, Mary went to the Tyrol #2 Township Country School. It was a one room schoolhouse with one teacher. Mary grew up on a farm south of Jessie, ND. She loved the outdoors and working with and feeding and caring for the animals. Mary graduated from Cooperstown High School (ND) in 1965. She attended Interstate Business College in Fargo, ND. She worked as a bookkeeper for Quality Meats and Seafoods, in West Fargo, ND for 39 years.
In 1974, she and Gerrit DeVries were married. They lived and worked in the West Fargo area for most of their lives. They attended First Assembly of God Church in Fargo, until Mary's retirement. Then they moved to a country place south of Lake Park, MN and attended the Lakes Area Vineyard Church, in Detroit Lakes, MN. For the past couple of years, Mary has lived with her niece, Liz Dagley and family, near Center, ND. She has loved to be involved in their daily activities and life as they have cared for her.
Mary loved gardening and flowers and did a lot of canning over the years.
Mary is survived by her brothers, Henry (Maryann) Maertens, Center, ND, George (Sharon) Maertens, Cooperstown, ND, Joseph (Karla) Maertens, West Fargo, ND; her sisters, Theresa (Patrick) Gross, Harwood, ND and Dorothy (Alan) Mowbray, Orlando, FL; plus numerous and much loved nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and many cousins; and a stepson, Darryl (Traci) DeVries and 2 grandchildren.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and sister, Ann (Maertens) Warlick.
