Marvin Russel Van Zante was born November 7, 1927, to Henry and Adriana (Grandia) Van Zante in Eddyville, IA, where he was raised on the Van Zante farm homestead. He was the youngest of ten children and their family and relatives attended the Dutch Reformed church in Eddyville.
Marvin graduated from Eddyville high school in 1945, and attended Central University of Iowa in Pella. Marvin then served with distinction, and with his brother Virgil, in the Korean war. He met Dorothy Hamre in Cedar Rapids, IA, at church where they were members. They were married in 1954, in Cedar Rapids. In 1957, they moved to Fargo, ND, where Dorothy grew up and where her parents lived.
While Marvin's dream of being a pastor was not achieved, he served as a lay minister in the Methodist church and taught confirmation for years. In 1973, the family became members of the First Assembly of God Church (now Northview.) Until recently, he was an active volunteer in his church, his neighborhood and his community.
Marvin became an insurance salesman for American Family Insurance. Dorothy was his accountant/bookkeeper. In addition, Marvin worked at McKesson Pharmaceutical Corporation.
Marvin died Thursday, August 20, 2020, at Essentia Health in Fargo. He was 92 years old.
He is survived by his children, Deborah (Don) Doran, Breckenridge, MN, Denise (Neil) Tift, Mesa, AZ, and Kelly, Phoenix AZ.
Marvin was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; and son, Kevin.
Visitation will begin at 12 noon, with a funeral at 1 PM, Wednesday, September 2, 2020, in Northview Church, Fargo.
Burial, with military honors, will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo.
