Mark Albert Vigilant

Mark Albert Vigilant, 81, of Moorhead, Minnesota, passed away at home on September 6, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was a beloved father, grandfather, and faithful friend whose loss will be deeply felt by all who knew him.

Mark was born on March 1, 1945, in the village of Good Hope on the island of Dominica, West Indies, to Vincint and Alie (née Eloi) Vigilant. In his early twenties, he immigrated to St. Croix in the United States Virgin Islands, where he became a naturalized U.S. citizen and married Madelaine Vigilant (née Williams).

Trained as a welder in his late twenties, Mark worked for many years at the Hess Oil Refinery Corporation before moving to the mainland United States to work in industrial construction in Texas and California. During those years, he worked alongside his beloved brother, John Vigilant, and spent countless hours weightlifting with him outside of work, creating memories and a bond that lasted a lifetime.

In the early to mid-2000s, Mark suffered a series of strokes that nearly took his life and eventually forced his retirement in 2010. After retiring from construction, and at the urging of his eldest son, Lee, who assured him that "winter in the Upper Midwest is balmy and mild if you dress for it," Mark decided to move to Minnesota to be closer to family.

Beginning in 2013, Mark became a familiar sight on the walking trails stretching from Gooseberry Park in Moorhead to Lindenwood Park in Fargo. For more than a decade, his daily routine often began at 5:00 a.m. as he set out on two- to three-hour walks along the Red River. These walks were a source of peace and joy, allowing him to enjoy the beauty of nature, reflect quietly, and connect with the many retired walkers and friends he met along the way.

Mark accepted the Seventh-day Adventist faith in his early twenties and remained devoted throughout his life. He regularly attended the Moorhead Seventh-day Adventist Church, where he was known for enthusiastically requesting one of his favorite hymns: "Don't Forget the Sabbath" (Hymn No. 388). His heartfelt singing often resonated throughout the congregation and reflected the faith that sustained him through life's joys and challenges.

Mark is survived by his sisters and brother-in-law, Andrina Stephanie Vigilant and Leotha (née Vigilant) Clarke and Monte Clarke; his beloved nieces Elna, Julia, Lorna, Marcia, and Deborah; and many extended family members.

He is also survived by his sons, Earl Vigilant and Lee Vigilant; his daughter-in-law, Ayuko Vigilant, whom he affectionately referred to as "my daughter"; and his cherished grandchildren, Jonah and Aya Vigilant, Andrea Vigilant, and Alexandria ("Ali") Castro.

He is further survived by his lifelong confidant and faithful friend, Duff Bonit of Good Hope, Dominica. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Drake Vigilant, John Vigilant, and Lince Vigilant. Mark Albert Vigilant now rests in the Blessed Hope of the first resurrection.
