Marilyn A. Hazen

Marilyn A. Hazen, 75, of Bemidji, MN, and Leander, TX, passed away Tuesday, August 15, 2022, in Sanford West Campus, Fargo, ND.

Marilyn Ann Schummer was born February 14, 1948, the daughter of Clarence and Mildred (Duff) Schummer in Bemidji.  She was raised there and attended school   Marilyn then went on to raise her three children in Bemidji.

She was later reunited with her high school sweetheart, Frank “Butch” Hazen and they were married April 16, 1977.  They lived several places over the years while Butch served in the military and settled in Bemidji after he retired.  She then went to work for the Bemidji Hospital where she worked in the kitchen, before working at the front desk and as a switchboard operator.  Butch passed away in January of 2010.  In 2018, Marilyn moved to Leander, TX, to live with her daughter, but spent her summers back in Bemidji. 

She was a longtime member of the Eagles Auxiliary.

Marilyn enjoyed bowling, sewing, and shopping.  She loved visiting people and was always up for a good conversation.  Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren. 

She is survived by her daughters, Ann Schommer, St. Cloud, MN and Mary (Vaughn) Frederick, Leander, TX; step-children, Pete Hazen, St. Cloud and Emily (Pat) Carner, Bemidji; grandchildren, Kenny, Kyle, Christian, Matthew, Hunter, Austin, Sierra, Brianna, Faith, Katie, and Kayla; ten great-grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy (Tim) Hall, Bemidji, Jody White, LaPorte, MN, Patty (Shane) Fricke, Becida, MN; brother, Paul (Alicia) Schummer, Bemidji; sister-in-law, Judy Schummer, LaPorte, MN; her beloved dog, Wickett; and many nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Butch; son, Darrin; brothers, Lloyd, Dale, and David; and sisters, Ruth, Christine, Mary and Clara.

The Memorial Mass in Marilyn’s honor will take place at St. Philip’s Catholic Church in Bemidji on Saturday, August 19, 2023 at 1 PM with the visitation one hour prior to the service at the church.  Burial will follow the service. A Luncheon will take place at Schummer’s Backwoods Bar and Grill.
