Kenneth Schlotfeldt, 89, of Moorhead, MN, passed away Monday, May 26, 2025, in Bethany on 42nd, Fargo, ND.

Ken was born to John and Clara (Wagner) Schlotfeldt on October 21, 1935, and grew up on a farm near Lidgerwood, ND. Ken enlisted in the US Army on March 30, 1955, and was honorably discharged on March 29, 1957.

In 1959, Ken married the love of his life Margie (Lange) at St. Boniface Church in Lidgerwood, ND. They made their home in Moorhead. In April of 1961 their first son Brian was born. In April of 1962 they welcomed their daughter, Debbie. In July of 1963 Kevin was born and 5 years later they brought home their youngest child Dale. In 1974 they said good-bye to their “town” home and moved 6 miles south of Moorhead to the place everyone knows as “The Farm”

With an entrepreneur spirit Ken had a lawn service which he expanded into a landscaping business. All three of his boys worked in the business throughout the many years that Ken made hundreds of yards beautiful for his clients. In 1980 Ken and Margie started “Schlotfeldt’s Pheasant Farm”. In the 39 years they had the Pheasant Farm, they raised nearly 500,000 pheasants from chicks to full grown roosters and hens. This was an operation that at one point or another, every family member and every grandchild was involved in. From picking eggs hourly in the cold spring days to Ashley picking in her Easter Sunday dress in her farm boots, memories were made year after year. When it came time to “peeper” the birds, it was all hands-on deck. Margie spent hundreds of hours washing and laying out peepers to dry.

Sunday nights were a very special time at the farm. Everyone gathered for Margie’s delicious cooking and shared in the guessing of what desert she would make that week. In the summer we looked forward to Ken’s grilling. But it was around the dining room table where weddings were announced, the news of Ken and Margie being grandparents was shared, some healthy debates took place, many laughs were enjoyed and we heard the words “let’s go chase in the birds”.

Ken will be forever known for “His Garden”. Each year he would say he was going to cut back and each year it grew as he found more spots to plant onions, several types of peppers, potatoes, beets, tomatoes, beans, peas, radishes and so much more. One of his greatest joys was planting pumpkins for his grandchildren and later his great grandchildren. He loved to watch them pick out their very own. His labor of love was his popcorn which he shucked by hand year after year. Nothing could compare to “Grandpa’s popcorn”.

Ken is survived by his wife of 65 years Margie; children Brian (Kim) Schlotfeldt, Moorhead, Debbie (Mike) Knight, Fargo, Kevin and Dale Schlotfeldt, Moorhead; grandchildren Ashley (Brent) Ancona, Eden Prairie, MN, Tyler (Rachel) Schlotfeldt, Moorhead, Adam and Austin Knight, Fargo; and three great grandchildren Emery and Camden Schlotfeldt and Bryson Ancona; Sister Joyce (Darrel) Klein, Breckinridge, MN; and many nieces and nephews.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents John and Clara; sisters, Levine, Norma, and Shirley Schlotfeldt, and Eleanor Kath, and brother, John Schlotfeldt.

A Visitation for Kenneth will begin at 10:00 AM, Friday, May 30, 2025, followed by a Rite of Christian Burial beginning at 11:00 AM, in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Moorhead.
