Karan Carney, 84, of Moorhead, MN, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2026, surrounded by loved ones at HIA- Heather’s House in Fargo, ND.
Karan Ann Louise Engness was born on July 20, 1941, in Fargo, ND, to Albin and Agnes (Akre) Engness. She grew up in Fargo, attended Agassiz Elementary School, and graduated from Central High School. Karan furthered her education at Moorhead State University, where she met her future husband, Buddy (Tom) Carney. On May 21, 1960, Karan and Buddy were united in marriage at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Moorhead. The couple made their home in Moorhead and joyfully welcomed six children: Chris, Sara, Kurt, Amy, Reggie, and Richard.
Amid a bustling household, Karan lovingly nurtured her children while Buddy worked at Booth Delivery. Alongside her family responsibilities, she worked at the Taco Shop with her brother and dedicated over 25 years to Eventide in housekeeping. Family time was precious to Karan; she cherished the yearly vacations at Pelican Lake with her family. Grandma treasured the many years of watching and sharing special moments with her grandchildren. As a devoted grandmother, she enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s activities and created lasting memories with her home-cooked specialties, including her renowned potato salad, banana bread, and tuna noodle hotdish.
From a young age, Karan enjoyed dancing and socializing with friends. She participated on a bowling team, enjoyed playing Bingo, and spent years supporting her husband and sons playing fastpitch softball. Karen will always be remembered for her gentle and sweet personality, strong work ethic, and her unconditional love for her family.
Karan will be deeply missed by her family but we take comfort in knowing she is at peace and no longer must deal with any health complications. We are also encouraged knowing she is reunited with the love of her life.
Karan’s memory will live on in the hearts of her family, son, Chris (Shelly) Carney and their children, Katey (Roger) Cale and Erik (Kelsey) Carney; daughter, Sara (Rick) Almer and their children, Scott (Christina) Rudrud, along with Ryan (Terri) Almer, Travis Almer, Brandon (Kim) Almer and Jeremy (Elena) Almer; son, Kurt (Lisa) and their son, Jacob (Abbey) Carney; daughter, Amy (Curt) Zimmel and their children, Ben Zimmel and Carson Zimmel (fiancé Anna Galvez); son, Reggie (Heather Ulven) Carney; and son, Richard (Jennifer) Carney and their children, Brianna (Anders) Lindegard, Brook (Samuel) Boulton, and twins, Bella Carney and Blakelyn Carney; she is also survived by 22 great-grandchildren; along with one sister; and several brothers and sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
