Jeannette Lucille "Janie" Barone passed away on October 6, 2026 at the age of 92.
She was born on April 6, 1934, in Dilworth, Minnesota, to Martin and Jeannette (Van Pelt) McCormick. Janie graduated from Dilworth High School in 1952 and immediately enlisted in the United States Air Force, proudly serving her country while stationed in Texas, Mississippi, and Florida.
On October 25, 1955, Janie married Albert Liberato Barone, at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church in Dilworth. Together they built a life rooted in love, laughter, and family. They settled in Moorhead in 1958, where they raised their three children and created a home that became the heart of countless memories.
While raising her family, Janie worked at Montgomery Ward and Dakota Clinic. Never one to shy away from a challenge, she made the courageous decision to return to school later in life. Proudly referring to herself as an "older-than-average" student, she earned her Registered Nursing degree from St. John's School of Nursing in 1975. She went on to enjoy a rewarding 20-year career as a registered nurse at Eventide Home and St. Ansgar Hospital, where she cared for others with compassion, skill, and quiet strength.
For 63 years, Albert and Janie's home on 19th Street South in Moorhead was a place where everyone felt welcome. It became affectionately known as "Grand Central Station" among their children's friends because you never knew who might stop by at any hour of the day or night. Janie was an exceptional cook and gracious hostess whose table always had room for one more. No one ever left her home hungry, and everyone left feeling cared for. She believed in people, encouraged them to become their very best, and inspired others to make the world a better place.
Janie was beautiful inside and out, with a strength that often surprised those who knew her. Her quick wit, infectious sense of humor, and honest, practical wisdom could light up any room. She never worried about what others thought and lived life unapologetically on her own terms until the very end. Above all, she was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who treasured every moment spent with her family.
Those who knew Janie also knew of her fondness for an ice-cold beer—always served in a wine glass. It was one of her many charming trademarks. So the next time you enjoy a cold one, consider pouring it into a wine glass, raising it high, and sharing a smile in her honor. She also loved to garden, go antiquing and hitting up the local Clinique or Lancome counter for a make-up “gift with purchase” deal.
Janie was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, Albert; her son, Thomas; her parents, Martin and Jeannette McCormick; and her sisters, Mary and Patricia. She is lovingly remembered by her children, James Patrick Barone (Victoria Reinhardt) of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, and Angelique Barone (Michael Lucas) of Omaha, Nebraska; her grandchildren, Michael, Erich (Erika), Greta, Ava, and Thomas; her great-grandchildren, Albert and Polly Ellen; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were enriched by knowing her.
Thank you to AseraCare Hospice in Omaha for their amazing support and care over the last few months.
The Funeral Mass will be on Monday, October 12, 2026, at noon in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Moorhead, with Visitation one hour prior. Burial with Military Honors will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery.
