Jean A. Hohenstern

April 23, 1931 — November 26, 2017

Jean Arlene (Polda) Hohenstern, 86, of Moorhead, MN, was granted her passage to heaven on Sunday, November 26, 2017. She passed away peacefully and was loved by all.

Born April 23, 1931, in Liberty Grove Township, ND, Jean was the daughter of the late Edward and Lucy (Kadachka) Polda. Jean was one of six children and grew up on the farm. She learned the meaning of hard work, dedication, and the importance of family while helping with chores and attending the small country school until completing the 8th grade.

On December 28, 1950, she married her husband of 65 years, Edmund Hohenstern, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Belford Township. The newlyweds lived briefly in Beaver Dam, WI, and later moved to the Moorhead area where they grew their family. Jean was the loving caretaker to many children in the Moorhead area. She worked out of her home for more than twenty years where she ran her own childcare business. She nurtured and loved these children and they became like family.

Jean loved her family with all her heart. She taught them, through her example, to work hard, appreciate what you have, always be helpful, and love your family with all your might. She loved the adventure of traveling with Edmund, playing cards with her family, listening to country and polka music, cuddling with her sweet dog Belle, watching her programs on TV (Dancing with the Stars and Days of Our Lives), shopping, more shopping, visiting her kids and their families, helping her kids with their home projects, rocking her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as they were born, and visiting with family and friends over coffee.

She always made time to bake a special treat or cook a special meal when she knew that family or visitors were coming by. She never missed a birthday and she learned to Facebook and FaceTime to visit with her grandkids and their families. She left a mark of love through these simple actions and her memory will live on as she is finally reunited with her husband, Edmund, in heaven.

Jean is survived by three daughters, Diane (Steve) Anderson of Stafford, VA, Bev Oostenink of Fargo, ND, and Tammie of Champlin, MN; one son, Scott (Robin) Hohenstern of Brooklyn Park, MN. She was blessed with eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

Visitation for Jean will be Friday, December 1, 2017, from 5 - 8 PM, with a prayer service at 7:30 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead. Her funeral will be Saturday, December 2, 2017, at 11 AM, in Trinity Lutheran Church, Moorhead. Burial will be at 3 PM Saturday, in St. John's Belford Lutheran Cemetery, Hankinson, ND.
