Glenn C. Tornell

April 30, 1947 — December 13, 2025

Fargo, North Dakota

Glenn Clifford Tornell, age 78, peacefully passed away on December 13, 2025, at his winter home on Whitemarsh Island, Savannah, Georgia. Born on April 30, 1947, in Lawrence, Massachusetts, Glenn lived a life defined by service, curiosity, integrity, and deep devotion to his family.

Raised in Minnesota, Glenn graduated from Forest Lake High School in 1964. He went on to earn his bachelor's degree in communications and English from the University of Minnesota in 1968 – an educational foundation that shaped his lifelong career in journalism and higher education. Glenn later pursued graduate studies at The Citadel Military College, Charleston, South Carolina, and received his master’s degree in communications.

On March 20, 1968, Glenn married the love of his life, Donna (Carlson) Tornell. Together, they built a family grounded in love, laughter, and unwavering support. They welcomed their daughter Darcy in 1968, followed by sons Adam in 1975 and Cliff in 1979.

In 1969, Glenn answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Air Force. He served honorably through 1972, including deployment during the Vietnam War, an experience that further shaped his perspective and sense of purpose.

Glenn’s professional life reflected his passion for storytelling and community. He served as editor of the Springfield Advance-Press from 1974 to 1978, where his thoughtful leadership and commitment to local journalism left a lasting mark. In 1978, he accepted a position at Moorhead State University (now Minnesota State University Moorhead), where he worked as news and publications director. Glenn retired in 2014 after more than three decades of shaping campus communications and mentoring countless students.

Glenn and Donna cherished their time at their lake home in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, where Glenn found joy in nature, family gatherings, photography, and the peaceful rhythm of lake life. With a camera often in hand, he loved capturing quiet moments, scenic beauty, and the people he held dear.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Donna; daughter, Darcy; son, Adam and his wife Stacy; and son, Cliff and his wife Jenny. Glenn was a proud grandfather to Danielle Beske (and her husband Joe), Maverick, Cash, Charli, Treyson, Andie, and Kenadee, and a cherished great-grandfather to Lincoln. He was also rarely seen without his loyal dog, Tybee.

Glenn will be remembered for his gentle but unmistakably cheeky humor, thoughtful conversations, love of reading and learning, and the quiet strength he brought to every chapter of his life.

A private family service was held.
