Gary L. Schulz

Gary L Schulz, 83, of Moorhead, MN, longtime Moorhead Fire Chief and Fire Marshall passed away on Friday, July 17, 2026.

Gary Leonard Schulz was born August 4, 1942, the son of Leonard and Marie (Fox) Schulz in Grafton, ND. The family lived in Hoople, ND and upon his father’s passing Gary and his younger brother, Doyle, moved with his mother, to Moorhead. He was raised in Moorhead and graduated from Shanley High School in 1960. Following high school, Gary initially began working in construction before joining NW Central Airlines in International Falls, MN.

On May 14, 1966, Gary was united in marriage to Paulette Born at St. Phillip’s Catholic Church in Hankinson, ND. They made their home in International Falls until settling in Moorhead following Gary’s transfer to Fargo with NW Central Airlines. In 1969, Gary began his distinguished twenty-nine-year career with the Moorhead Fire Department, holding positions as Fire Marshall and Fire Chief, which exemplified his dedication to the community. In addition, he served in the North Dakota Air National Guard for 20 years, retiring as a Chief Master Sergeant in 1999.

He was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Moorhead and longtime member of the American Legion Post #21 where he once held the position of Commander.

Gary enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, snowmobiling, and spending time at the family lake cabin on Hoffman Lake near Dent, MN. During his younger days he also enjoyed playing softball and baseball.

Gary is survived by his wife of sixty years, Paulette; son, Scott Schulz, Moorhead, MN; brother, Doyle (Patricia) Schulz, Fargo, ND; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Louis Bertrand; and daughter, Deborah.

A Visitation for Gary will begin at 10:00 AM, Friday, July 24, 2026, followed by his Mass of Chrisitan Burial at 11:00 AM in St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Moorhead. He will be laid to rest in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Moorhead.
