Fred Michael Fritel

October 7, 1949 — October 16, 2025

West Fargo

Fred Fritel, age 76, of West Fargo, ND died on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at Sanford Hospital in Fargo. His last act on this earth was to donate his body tissues to those in need.

Frederick Michael Fritel, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and dedicated educator, was born on October 7, 1949, as the ninth child in a loving family of eleven, to Rudolph and Catherine (Brossart) Fritel in Rugby, North Dakota. Growing up on the family farm, Frederick embraced the values of hard work and camaraderie, which he carried throughout his life. He was a vibrant youth who spent his summers working on local farms, reinforcing his strong roots and work ethic. Fred not only excelled in academics but also showcased remarkable athleticism, participating in football, wrestling, and track during his high school years. He would graduate from Rugby High School in 1968.

Frederick pursued higher education at Valley City State University, where he not only continued to play football and wrestle but also shaped his future as an educator. Graduating in 1972 with a teaching and coaching degree, he met his soulmate, Jackie Brainerd, whom he married on August 11, 1973, in Rugby. They began their journey together in Minnewauken, where Fred took on his first teaching role, but it was in Valley City that they would build their lives for the next 40 years.

Fred dedicated over four decades to shaping the minds and futures of countless children. He started with a tenure at St. Catherine’s and then devoted 25 years to Jefferson Elementary as a physical education teacher, blending education with fun through activities such as jump rope for heart teams. His passion for coaching extended beyond the classroom; he instilled a sense of achievement in his athletes as he guided the boys’ and girls’ cross country teams and supported track athletes, particularly jumpers, helping them reach new heights, including many state championships. After 40 years of service, he retired, leaving an indelible mark on the community.

In 2012, Fred and Jackie relocated to Fargo, where he once again answered the call to coach, this time the Davies’ girls’ jumpers, enjoying five more years of mentoring young athletes. Outside of teaching and coaching, he thrived on outdoor pursuits such as golfing, fishing, and hunting. His creativity shone through his wood carving, as he crafted comfort crosses and comfort birds, spreading joy and solace to those around him. Every Wednesday night, he joined friends for Texas hold’em, relishing the camaraderie and spirited competition.

Throughout the years, Frederick cherished watching his grandchildren grow, supporting them in their activities and sharing in their joys. His legacy of kindness, dedication, and love will forever remain in the hearts of his family and the countless students he inspired.

Fred is remembered not just for his achievements, but for the warmth he brought into the lives of everyone who knew him. His spirit will continue to shine brightly in the memories he leaves behind.

Fred is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jackie, West Fargo, ND; two children: Brady (Liz) Fritel, West Fargo, Heather Fritel, Moorhead, MN; two grandchildren: Isabel and Eli Fritel; seven siblings: Joe (Naomi) Fritel, Frank Fritel, Bea Bachmeier, Elsie (Harvey) Leonard, Marge Heilman, Ray (Judy) Fritel, Kathy (Doug) Hagel; three sisters-in-law: Lorraine, Pat, and Debbie Fritel; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rudolph and Catherine Fritel; siblings: Janice Fritel, Will Fritel, Ed Fritel and Ernie Fritel; and brothers-in-law: Richard Heilman and Vince Bachmeier.
