Donald P. Bates, 86, of Fargo, ND, and formerly of St. Cloud, MN, died Saturday February 13, 2021, at Sanford Health West Campus, Fargo.
Donald Phillip Bates was born May 31, 1934, the son of Frank and Pernella (Twenge) Bates, in Grant County, rural Norcross, MN. He was raised on a farm attending North Ottawa Country School, Norcross school and Herman (MN) High School. He then began farming in rural Norcross.
On January 30, 1954, Donald was united in marriage to Marilyn Ann Johnson at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Norcross. They began their lives by farming until 1959 when they moved to St. Cloud where Donald worked in sales for many years. In 1983, they retired and spent their summers on a lake near Alexandria, MN, and their winters in Texas. They purchased a home in Pharr, TX, in 1996, where they lived until 2011 when they moved to Fargo.
Donald enjoyed hunting, camping, wood-working and stained glass. He was a devoted husband and father and especially loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Donald is survived by his wife of 67 years, Marilyn; children, Brian (Lorrie) Bates, Apple Valley, MN, Brenda Kay (Bates) Wilts, Dilworth, MN, and Scott (Susan) Bates, Fargo; grandchildren, Nicole (James) Bowman, Jamie (Scott) Bertram, Andrew (Wendi) Bates, Adam (Kayla) Bates and Alexander (Jazlyn Brossart) Bates; great-grandchildren, Morgan and Brayden Bowman, Makayla, Hayley and Isabelle Bertram, Jace Jo Pederson, Mackenzie and Kambryn Fassett, Ryker and Emilia Bates, and Carter Eide; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gerald Bates; and granddaughter, Tami Jo (Wilts) Pederson.
A Visitation for Donald will be Tuesday, February 16, 2021, from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.
Funeral Services will be held privately.
Burial will take place in Lakeside Cemetery, Herman, MN.
In accordance with CDC and local guidelines, social distancing and masks will be required for attendance. Donald's service will be live-streamed beginning at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, February 17, 2021 and the link can be found on his obituary page by visiting www.korsmofuneralservice.com.
