Donald Robert Getz

November 8, 1928 — November 20, 2025

Detroit Lakes

On November 20, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family, Donald Robert Getz bade farewell to this world. Born on November 8, 1928, on a farm in rural Wilkin County, Minnesota, Don was the cherished eldest son of Leonard and Ann (Rehder) Getz. His youth was spent amongst the rolling fields and the cheerful sounds of sibling antics, alongside twin brothers who would share both mischief and memories.

In 1950, Don embarked on a new chapter when he married Barb Berglund. Their journey began in Wichita Falls, Texas, where they welcomed their first child, Rick, and Don would enter the Air Force. After Don proudly served his country, the couple returned to their Minnesota roots, eventually adding their beloved daughter, Julie, to their growing family. Settling in Barnesville, Don embraced an enduring career in auto sales, founding Getz Chevrolet in 1971, after his beginnings at A & B Motors. Don would move on to Nereson Motors in Detroit Lakes where he continued his love of cars. For over thirty years he had a special friend and partner Joan Marotzke (and her family) to share his time and adventures with.

Don's talents shone brightly throughout his life; he possessed a remarkable knack for forging genuine connections with everyone he encountered. His infectious sense of humor and engaging spirit drew people in, transforming mere transactions into lasting relationships. He not only sold cars, but he built friendships that spanned generations. Even at the remarkable age of 97, Don remained active in the business, a testament to his unwavering dedication and passion.

Outside the dealership, Don cherished the great outdoors. He found joy in the thrill of deer hunting and the serene beauty of fishing. Creativity flowed through his hands as he crafted stunning stained-glass artworks and diamond art, showcasing his artistic side that complemented his vibrant personality. Known for his culinary delights, Don's head cheese and lefse were the talk of gatherings, while his playful spirit often made appearances with a Windsor-Water in hand and pull-tabs scattered across the table.

Don leaves behind a loving family, including his daughter Julie (Tom Barten) Kassick of Bloomington, MN, and his cherished grandchildren, Megan (Ahmed Abdul Azim) Kassick of Philadelphia, PA, and Brandon (Nicole Rohwer) Kassick of Farmington, MN. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Janice Getz of Barnesville, MN, all of Joan’s family, and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who will forever hold him close in their hearts.

He now joins his son, Rick Getz, and his beloved parents, Leonard and Ann Getz, along with his brothers, Richard and Robert (Judy) Getz, in eternal peace.

As we celebrate the life of Donald Robert Getz, we remember a man who lived fully, loved deeply, and left an indelible mark on all those fortunate enough to know him. His legacy will continue to inspire laughter, friendship, and warmth—a true testament to a life well-lived.
