Deloris Deutscher

August 19, 1931 — February 28, 2024

Moorhead, MN

Deloris Schumaker was born on August 19, 1931, on a farm outside of Streeter, ND, the second of seven children born to Pauline Graf and Fred Schumaker. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Streeter and attended school at a country schoolhouse a few miles from the family farm.

Deloris remembered the family had an old horse by the name of Bill who would pull a wagon full of kids each morning and drop them off at school. Then Bill, the horse would turn around and go back to the farm all on his own and the kids would have to walk home after school was done each day. She said later they had a Shetland Pony named Dyna that would also take them to school but was not as reliable. The pony would often lay down on the way to school and refused to get up. So, they would have to walk the rest of the way. Deloris went to school through about the seventh or eighth grade, but their father was sick, so she and her sister Olga had to stay home and help on the farm and take care of household things.

On Saturday nights Deloris worked at the grocery store in Streeter working at the meat counter cutting meat and helping with the till. She met her future husband Alfred Deutscher walking up and down the street in Streeter on Friday and Saturday nights because there was not much else to do. When she was about 18 her father Fred and her uncle Ted Dewald took her to Fargo and got her a job at Dahl’s Super Value. She said she was very nervous about doing a good job, but Mr. Dahl was a very kind man and helped her get the hang of it. She shared a small apartment with Amy Eisenbise Moser and Della Fischer Morlock.

Alfred was now working on the Northern Pacific Railroad in Dilworth and during this time he was drafted into the Army. Alfred and Deloris wrote to each other while he served in Korea and when he returned, they married on April 10, 1955, at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Streeter. To this union were born three children…David, Douglas, and Dean

While taking care of the home and family, Deloris participated in the life of the church through worship, women’s circle meetings, and running the kids to choir, youth group and other activities at Dilworth Lutheran Church in Dilworth and at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Moorhead.

Deloris liked to golf and bowl and was in a women’s bowling league. She loved to refinish antique furniture, was musical, playing the piano and accordion and had a love flowers, especially tulips, daffodils, and violets.  She made wonderful German foods and her brother-in-law, Jim Peckham, would ask her to make him batches of her Kuchen.

After the kids were older, she worked at the Dairy Queen in the Brookdale Shopping Center in south Moorhead where she affectionately became known as Daisy. She liked working at DQ and making Dilly Bars, Buster Bars, and working alongside her new friends.

After Alfred retired from the railroad, they traveled to Branson, Missouri, and Apache Junction, Arizona in their motorhome. For the past three years she has lived at River Pointe Assisted Living in Moorhead. Her sons would like to say thanks to the staff and administration of River Pointe for all the wonderful care she received while living here. Deloris was very happy to be here.

Deloris passed away on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at the age of 92 at Sanford Hospital in Fargo.

She was preceded in death by her sisters Hilda, Ellentina, and DeElda; and by her husband, Alfred. She is survived by her three sons Dean, Doug, and Dave, her grandchildren Emily, Benjamin and Joseph; her sisters, Olga, Donna, and her brother, Arnie.

May God richly bless the memory of Deloris among us.
