Daniel Thomas Weir, 72, of Moorhead, Minnesota, died on September 2, 2026. He centered his life on faith, family, and spending time with the people he loved.
Dan was born on November 23, 1953, in Winnebago, Minnesota, to Max and Delores Weir. After losing his father at age five, he was raised by his mother and grandfather alongside his younger brother David. His childhood included years in Frazee, Minnesota, and several moves before he graduated from high school in Starbuck, Minnesota. He received an associates degree in Nondestructive Testing from Ridgewater College in Hutchinson, Minnesota, and worked toward a bachelor’s degree in Operations Management at Metro State University in Saint Paul.
While living in the Twin Cities, Dan met and fell in love with Colleen Jane McCartney. They married on June 16, 1979, in Comfrey, Minnesota, beginning a marriage that would span 47 years. During their courtship, Dan wrote many letters to Colleen, once telling her that “your hand is on my heart.” Throughout those letters, he often expressed his hope that they would continue to grow in faith together. God would fulfill that hope with abundance over the half century Dan and Colleen would spend together.
Dan was a proud father to his son, Daniel Aaron, and his daughter, Bethany Abigail. His announcement of “It’s a girl!” when Bethany was born became a treasured expression of how much fatherhood meant to him. In 1992, Dan and Colleen moved their family from Circle Pines to Moorhead. Through the years of raising a family and watching his children build lives of their own, being their dad remained one of his greatest joys.
Dan worked many jobs over the course of his life. He performed nondestructive testing on projects ranging from water towers to nuclear power plants to the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. He spent a decade managing production at various steel fabrication companies before transitioning to information systems, first for a publisher and then at the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of North Dakota. He worked in that role until his retirement in 2016.
In retirement, Dan enjoyed traveling to many countries with Colleen, learning about new places and sharing those experiences with her. He welcomed the challenge of learning to scuba dive and the opportunity to see a world beneath the water. To Colleen’s great surprise, Dan decided to learn ballroom dance and enjoyed doing so for as long as he was able.
Retirement also gave Dan more time to work on their dream home in Bozeman, Montana. He spent countless hours designing the home with Colleen, working alongside her family to lay the foundation, and building the house with his own hands. It was a labor of love, and he took great pride in both his work and the beauty of the home they created. He and Colleen made their home there when they were not traveling the world or spending time with their grandchildren.
Being Grandpa brought Dan great joy. He spent many hours reading to his grandchildren, playing with them, and simply enjoying their company. He delighted in watching them grow and in being part of their lives.
Faith remained a constant throughout Dan’s life. He attended Triumph Lutheran Brethren Church for decades and also developed close ties with Bethel Christian Reformed Church near his Montana home. These church communities were a blessing to him. In later years, he developed an interest in singing and attended the Sing! worship conference in Nashville with Colleen, finding another way to deepen and express his faith through song. The words that held special meaning for him also capture the legacy he hoped to leave: “May all who come behind us find us faithful.”
Dan is survived by his wife, Colleen Jane Weir; his son, Daniel (Laurel Curry) Weir; his daughter, Bethany (Richard) Cromwell; his brother, David Kevin Weir; his grandchildren, Seraphina Grace Cromwell, Malachi Elias Cromwell, Marin Ava Weir, and Daniel Schuyler Weir; as well as his many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his beloved cousin Kevin Anderson.
He was preceded in glory by his parents, Max Eugene Weir and Delores La Mae (Mielke) Johnson.
A funeral service and visitation will be held at Triumph Lutheran Brethren Church – East Campus in Moorhead. Visitation will be Sunday, September 13, from 3PM – 5PM, followed by a 5PM Prayer Service. His funeral service will be Monday, September 14, at 11:00 AM with visitation one hour prior.
Memorial gifts may be directed to the ALS Association (als.org).
