Carol A. Bergerson, 82, Audubon, MN, passed peacefully surrounded by her family at Heather’s House – HIA Hospice in Fargo, ND.
Carol was born on May 21, 1944, to Norbert and Harriet (Larson) Miller at the U.S. Naval Base in Norman, OK. Raised in Benson, MN, she graduated from Mount St. Benedict Academy in Crookston, MN, and continued her studies at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities campus.
In 1963, she married Larry Cluever and they welcomed three daughters: Beth, Carrie, and Julie.
Carol was a dedicated worker, often holding multiple jobs, and was skilled in saving money and budgeting, making the most of every penny. She was generous with her time, volunteering for her church and community. On December 20, 1993, Carol married Doug Bergerson in Detroit Lakes. Over their 30 years together, they traveled throughout the U.S. and cherished time with friends and family. Carol served as the City Clerk of Audubon for 22 years before retiring. Known for her sociability, she excelled at keeping in touch with people. Her passions included baking and gardening, where she found joy in planning, planting, and nurturing her garden. During summer, she sold hundreds of dill heads, with the earnings supporting the next year’s garden. Carol and Doug also enjoyed several outings to Jasper Theater with dear friends, Janice and Sanford Haugen.
Carol loved sweets and was an exceptional baker. Her legendary pumpkin bars were made extra special with homegrown pumpkins. After the harvest, she and Doug were busy canning pickles and preserving their bounty. Despite not liking tomatoes, she grew them superbly, impressing her daughters. Her flower gardens were equally beautiful, showcasing her green thumb.
Tenacious, determined, and driven, Carol continued to persevere even as her health declined. She was full of wit and humor. Her family and the NDSU Bison football team were vital to her; all calls waited until after the game. She held a deep affection for Elvis Presley, marking his birthday and memorial annually. Doug casually stated he never felt threatened by Carol's love for Elvis.
Carol will be deeply missed by her husband, Doug Bergerson of Audubon, MN; two daughters, Carrie (Michael) Neumann of Georgetown, TX, and Julie (David) Flakker of Fargo, ND; four grandchildren, Bradley Layaoen, Kialani Layaoen, Megan (Chris) Kraft, and Taylor (Liam) Cassel; one sister, Mary Jane (Perry Schwartz) Miller of Chanhassen, MN; one brother, Norman (Lisa) Miller of Tulsa, OK; and son-in-law, Edward Layaoen.
She is preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Beth Layaoen; and of course, Elvis Presley.
Memorial contributions can be directed to HIA Health 3800 56th Ave. S. Fargo, ND 58104 in memory of Carol A. Bergerson.
