Mabel Burkhardt

Mabel M. Burkhardt, 89, of Moorhead, MN, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 30, 2018, in Bethany on University, Fargo, ND.

Mabel was born December 5, 1928, to Alfred and Mildred (Brummer) Benson in Richwood Township, MN. The family later settled in Hamden Township, northwest of Audubon, where Mabel attended rural school and graduated from District 34 in Becker County in 1942. In her formative years, Mabel helped on the family farm and also worked for several neighbors in the area helping with domestic duties and taking care of children. As a young lady, Mabel moved to Moorhead and worked at Howard's Café where she was introduced to Les.

On August 14, 1949, Mabel married Leslie Burkhardt in Moorhead, and they made their home in the F-M area. To this union, five children were born, Patricia, Raymond, Donna, Rodney and Marcia. Mabel was a wonderful mother and grandmother and loved spending time with the family. She enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, gardening, and fishing, was an avid whist, pinochle and Scrabble player, a faithful Twins radio fan and especially loved time at the lake cabin with family and friends. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the Moorhead VFW Auxiliary and the Fargo Eagles Auxiliary.

In 1965, Les and Mabel opened Burkhardt's Texaco and Mabel kept the books for the service station and was proud to have accounted for every penny. After they closed the Texaco station, Mabel worked at the Double D Restaurant for several years. Mabel entered Bethany Care Community, Willow Lane Memory Care Unit, in July of 2009.

Mabel is survived by her children, Patricia (Tom) Newgard, Moorhead, Ray (Lori), Fargo, Donna (Duane) Hanson, Ada, MN, Rodney (Susan), Goodyear, AZ, and Marcia (Tim) Rose, Lynchburg, ND; grandchildren, Kristina (Gerald) Peterson, Hutchinson, MN, Jerad (Bethany) Newgard, Mandan, ND, Carson and Karianne Newgard, Moorhead, Damien Burkhardt, Fargo, Cory (Denae) Burkhardt, Fargo, Sarah (Scott) Zins, Brooklyn Park, MN, Justin (Lindsey) Burkhardt, Fargo, Wesley Hanson, St. Louis Park, MN, Amanda Hanson, Fargo, Donovan Hanson, East Grand Forks, MN, Jessica Burkhardt, Goodyear, AZ, Matthew (Meghan) Burkhardt, Moorhead, Tyrell (Ericka) Rose, Grand Forks, ND, and Michael Rose, Cambridge, MA; and 16 great-grandchildren, Sabin Peterson, Ryker and Emery Newgard, Reese Burkhardt, Lane Engelhardt, Skyler and Brieonna Burkhardt, Abigail, Jack and Olivia Zins, Elise and Adeline Burkhardt, Braxton, Cole and Jase Burkhardt, and Carter Rose. Mabel was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Les; parents; siblings, Chester, Earl, Dorothy and infant brother, Roger; and her granddaughter's husband, Jeremy Fiecke.

A Visitation for Mabel will be one hour prior to service.

Her Funeral Service will be Saturday, February 3, 2018, at 2:00 PM, in Grace United Methodist Church, Moorhead.

Burial will be in the Moorhead Memorial Gardens, Moorhead.
