Leo Schuman, 75, of Glyndon, MN, died Friday, January 2, 2015, in his home, surrounded by his family after a courageous fight with Mesothelioma, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Leo was born April 3, 1939, the son of John and Frances (Billmeyer) Schuman at Swanville, MN. He was raised in Swanville and graduated from Swanville High School in 1957. After graduation he moved to Moorhead and began working at Northwestern Supply.
On May 6, 1961, he was united in marriage to Diane Stuhr in Barnesville, MN. They moved to their new home in Glyndon in 1962, where they have lived for the last 53 years. Leo later went to work for Northern Water Works Supply in Fargo, ND, for thirty-five years, retiring in 2001. After retirement he enjoyed his many backyard flower beds and garden.
Leo was a fifty-year member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Dilworth, where served on the church council, and helped with the Spaghetti Dinners and did maintenance around the church. He also assisted with the Glyndon Boy Scout program, was a Glyndon Fire Volunteer for nearly 25 years, and served on the city council for several years.
He enjoyed summer and winter ice fishing, but most of all, fishing with his family and grandchildren. He looked forward to an annual salmon fishing trip to Lake Michigan which was always rewarding. Leo and Diane did a lot of traveling over the years with Diane's business and to visit family in California and Georgia.
Leo is survived by his wife, Diane Schuman; children, Mark (Zonia) Schuman, Wilton, CA, Paula (Trent) Johnson, Moorhead, MN, Thomas (Lauren) Schuman, Jefferson, GA, and David (Maren) Schuman, Moorhead; grandchildren, Kayla (Tanner), Amy, Christina, Sam, Clyde, Megan, Austin, McKenna, Erin and Bradley; great-grandchild, Anders; and brother, Lawrence (Faye) Schuman, Sartell, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Sister Mary Schuman (OSF).
Most of all Leo loved his church, family and friends. We will miss Leo's endless wit, sense of humor and joy of life.
The family wants to thank Fr. Pat Sullivan, Dr. Snow and her staff at Roger Maris Cancer Center, and Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of the Red River Valley or a charity of your choice.
