Dorothy Carey, age 86, Moorhead, MN, died early Tuesday, December 13, 2004 at her home in Moorhead, the result of a house fire.

Dorothy Bertha Grettum was born February 12, 1919 in Ulen, MN, the daughter of Henry and Bessie Grettum. She attended several different schools in the area and graduated from Dilworth (MN) High School in 1936.
After graduating from Moorhead State College, Dorothy was a school teacher who taught in schools ranging from a one-room schoolhouse, where she cross country skied to school, to Moorhead High School.

On June 5, 1946, Dorothy married Thomas Patrick Carey in Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead. In 1946, they purchased the property where she lived until her death. She taught part-time as a substitute and at Clearview School, until she resumed teaching full time at Riverside Elementary School in Moorhead. Dorothy loved teaching and remembered every student and enjoyed talking about them as they were in school and who they had become as adults.
Dorothy was very involved at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Moorhead, and, among other activities, served as the first woman president of the church council. She was active in the church Library Guild and the quilters group. Dorothy was a member of the same Homemakers group for over 50 years. She enjoyed taking care of her yard, gardening, and walking her dog.

Dorothy is survived by a daughter, Sandra Ann (John) Sutter, Lake Park, MN; a son, Kevin Patrick Carey, Boston, MA; a grandson, Sean Patrick Sutter, Anoka, MN; two sisters, Hildur (Doug) Coen, Detroit Lakes, MN, and Phyllis (Homer) Bryant, Richmond, VA; nephews, Paul (Jane) Coen, Syracuse, NE, Peter (Karla) Coen-Tuft, Grand Forks, ND, Philip (Cara) Coen-Pesch, St. Louis Park, MN, John (Paula) Grettum, Fargo, ND, and James (Carol) Grettum, Fargo; and nieces, Lesley (Scott) Helsrich, Texas, and Susan (Randy) Cook, Midlothian, VA.
