Mary Racek Johnson

Mary Racek Johnson, 84, of Moorhead, MN, died in her home on Thursday, September 7, 2017, under the care of her family and Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Mary Delia Thom, the daughter of Louis and Delia (Pearson) Thom, was born in Moorhead on March 25, 1933. As an infant, Mary went to live with Clara and Tony Hansmann, who lovingly raised her. She attended school in Moorhead at St. Joseph's Catholic School and Moorhead High School, where she graduated in 1950.

On Nov. 13, 1954, Mary married Darrell Racek in Moorhead. She worked for the City of Moorhead as a billing clerk for many years. She also worked as a sales clerk in a local ladies clothing store. Darrell died in 1988.

On Feb. 10, 1996, Mary married Herbert Lee Johnson. They lived in Moorhead, but traveled extensively and wintered in the south. Lee died in 2011, and Mary continued to live in Moorhead.

Mary was a life-long member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where she was active in many church and school ministries. Mary was an avid bowler, and had many life-long friends. She loved babies, and was very proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and their many activities.

Mary is survived by her children, Frank (Peg) Racek, West Fargo, ND, Mary Beth (Jim) Payne, West Fargo, Karen Racek, Moorhead, Lori (Randy) Griffith, Park Rapids, MN, and Carol (Tom) Tepley, Moorhead; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Robert and James Hansmann.

Visitation for Mary will be Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2017, from 6 PM until 7 PM, followed by a prayer service at 7 PM, at Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.

Her funeral mass will be Wednesday, at 11 AM, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Moorhead.

Her burial will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Moorhead.
