Kay Maki

November 25, 1950 — February 5, 2017

Kay Lynn Turnbull was born November 25, 1950, in Perham, MN, to Howard and Carmel (Carlson) Turnbull. She was raised in Frazee, MN, with her older sister, Virginia.

As a child, she had a cat she would dress up and treat like her baby. She fondly told stories of how she could put it to bed and it would stay in that spot until she gave it permission to move. Even her mother could not get it to move. After entering school, she enjoyed many school activities and was extremely involved in 4-H Club.

She met her husband, Darrel Maki, at a dance in Perham, and they were married October 28, 1967, in Frazee. They were blessed with three children. Kay died Sunday, February 5, 2017, in Viking Manor, Ulen, MN, at sixty-six years of age.

Kay was a wonderful seamstress for many years making doll clothes and crafts to sell. She also loved sewing clothes and gifts for her children and grandchildren before her eye sight made it too difficult to sew any longer. She also loved jigsaw puzzles and word finds. The biggest project she had worked on was researching her family history. As a parent, she was involved in her children's activities as much as possible, and she has passed that lesson on to her grown children.

Kay is survived by her husband, Darrel, Moorhead; daughter, Melissa Varanai, Moorhead; sons, Michael (Kristi) Maki, San Tan Valley, AZ, and Christopher Maki, Moorhead; three grandchildren, Ryan and Kaylee Maki, and Allison Varanai; and a sister, Virginia Renneke, Moorhead.

Visitation will be from 1 - 2 PM, with a memorial service at 2 PM, Sunday, February 12, 2017, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.
