Alyce VanWie

Alyce VanWie, age 71, Moorhead, MN, died on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2018, in Sanford Palliative Care, Fargo, ND. Jesus welcomed her home to heaven, where she was able to finally meet her many sweet babies that went before her. She will spend eternity singing and dancing with the angels.

Alyce Rae Schmidt was born Jan. 12, 1947, in St. Paul, MN. She graduated from Moorhead High School in 1965, and then attended Moorhead State University. She later finished her college degree at Old Dominion University.

On December 26, 1969, Alyce married Steven VanWie. Together, they spent many years traveling while Steve was in the Navy and Alyce loved the adventure of it all. She would frequently talk about the travels and her memories of military life.

After her divorce, Alyce returned to the Fargo-Moorhead area. She spent her life caring for children, born and unborn, and she wanted them to know the love of Christ. As she worked through the struggle of having her own child, she assisted in getting in vitro fertilization started in the United States.

Alyce experienced the reality of life at conception while donating her eggs and her time to the research of infertility. She carried on this passion through her time spent fighting to give another option to those looking at abortion. She cared for many children in her home daycare over the years. She loved them all as if they were her own, because in many ways they were the additional children that she was never able to have. She worked in the Fargo Public School for many years as a paraprofessional educator, caring for even more children.

Her faith and love of the Lord was evident to anyone who was near Alyce. She was outspoken and independent but cared so deeply for her friends and family. She was a faithful servant to anyone in need and wanted everyone to know the power of Christ's salvation.

Alyce is survived by her daughter, Danielle (Nick) Schmidt, Jamestown, ND; one grandson, Nolan, who was her pride and joy; sisters, Deona (Brad) Grondahl, and Vicki Steen (David Kinslow); brother, Lewis (Kathy) Schmidt Jr.; four nieces and five nephews. She was preceded by her parents and a brother, Rodger A. Schmidt.

Visitation for Alyce will be Friday, March 2, 2018, from 5 PM until 7 PM, followed by a Service of Celebration for her at 7 PM, in Bethel Evangelical Free Church, Fargo.
